This is my last week of clinicals. Last week I got in "trouble".
An evil respiration therapist exaggerated an encounter we had into something it wasn't. Here's what happened... I was observing the insertion of a urinary catheter, the resp. therapist knocked on the door and I answered it. I advised him we were in the middle of a procedure and asked if he could come back a little later. I was polite and professional. The story he told was that "a student refused to let him enter a patient's room and slammed the door in his face" (Now I only wish I had). I find it interesting that this man was a white, straight (I'm assuming), married, overweight male. I'd never play the gay card but if I had to guess I'd say some homophobia was involved.....
Of course his exaggerated version of the story spread very quickly and my instructor was pulled aside by the head nurse and asked that I be addressed over this "inappropriate behavior". So to cut to the chase, I simply told my side of the story, the primary nurse who was in the room with me told the same story I did and the issue was dropped.
Oh, except that my instructor asked me to apologize to the head nurse. Ummm, I did. Because I'm a student and I only have one more week to go and I am carefully choosing my battles. The head nurse told me that next time, to improve my communication skills, perhaps I could give him an actual time frame in which to return to the room. I asked her if she thought this would help him with his low self-esteem and small town ignorance........No I didn't!! I just thought it, and politely thanked her for the good advice. ONE MORE WEEK!
I bought some wool yarn this weekend. I'm going to make some pot holders and "felt" them. Felting looks cool, and I like to make cool stuff. I'm hoping after next week (week of finals) I can get on the crochet kick again. It comes and goes.
